Mother Gaia Studio
Based in Bauru, Brazil
You've been hired by Bras Cubas, an influential entrepreneur of twentieth century's Rio de Janeiro, to find the culprit behind a murder. The catch: the victim is Bras himself, and he won't let you move on until you solve the case. Meet and interrogate multiple suspects, and uncover their ulterior motives. Delve into this imaginary take on Rio and gather clues that will help you unravel this mystery.
The Posthumous Investigation was born from a game jam. More precisely, the Global Game Jam 2014, which the theme was 'We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are'. The result was Groundhog Day, a short interactive fiction where a detective interrogates the inhabitants of a small town where a murder has happened, and has to decide who did it based on half testimonies and inconclusive evidence. Fast forward to 2017, when ANCINE's federal grant allowed us to pursue this into a full-fledged game. We also took the opportunity to pay homage to one of Brazil's greatest novel writers, Machado de Assis. His works aren't necessarily recognized as thrillers nor murder mysteries per se (there are controversies!), but we thought its ironic humor and morally dubious characters would fit like a glove. And thus was born The Posthumous Investigation.
- Solve puzzles and collect multiple clues in the many parts of Rio de Janeiro
- Find and interrogate a network of 14 suspicious characters, all with their own routines spread throughout the day
- Count with the victim's help to find out what really happened
- Use the time loop to learn the suspects' behaviors, and influence them into doing different things
